American Wheat Beer

Hey there, SewHop'd beer enthusiasts! Today, we will take a little trip back in time to explore the fascinating history of American Wheat Beer. Believe it or not, this beer style has roots in ancient civilizations. The Babylonians, for example, were known to brew a beer made from wheat and barley. In medieval Europe, wheat beer was a popular choice among monks prohibited from drinking wine. Fast forward to the United States in the 1980s, and a craft beer revolution was brewing. Brewers began experimenting with new styles and ingredients, including wheat. It was during this time that American Wheat Beer started to gain popularity. Widmer Brothers Brewing was one of the most influential breweries in the rise of American Wheat Beer, based in Portland, Oregon. In 1986, they released their flagship beer, the Widmer Hefeweizen, a game-changer for the American craft beer scene. The popularity of American Wheat Beer continued to grow throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Today, it's a staple on tap lists across the country. But what makes American Wheat Beer so unique? Unlike traditional German wheat beers, American Wheat Beer tends to be lighter in body and less sweet. It's also often brewed with wheat and barley, giving it a distinct flavor profile. So, the next time you crack open a cold American Wheat Beer, take a moment to appreciate its long and storied history. This beer has stood the test of time, from ancient civilizations to modern craft breweries.

Sew Hop'd Brewery is home to the original Union Special Sewing Manufacturing building, hence the name Sew Hop'd Brewery (do you see what we did there?!) So it only seemed fitting to name our American Wheat Beer after the ol' American sewing institution we call home: Union Special. This refreshing beer is crafted with a wheat and barley malt blend, yielding a smooth and light body with a crisp finish. Splashes of orange and cranberry Stand boldly making this the perfect beer to toast to the enduring spirit of American innovation.

Cheers to the history of American Wheat Beer!
